Homepage of the Irwin Peace Garden Project
An  initiative on Urban Farming in Irwin!

The IRWIN PEACE GARDEN was
Installed on May 12, 2007 at Bell Park, on Main Street, in downtown Irwin, PA.

Sponsor: Irwin Business & Professional Association (IBPA).

What is a Peace Garden?  A Peace Garden is an Earth-friendly method for producing sustainable, high-yield and low cost crops in very small spaces of land.  In fact, you can grow vegetables, herbs and flowers together in a Peace Garden.

Who needs a Peace Garden?  Everyone, especially urban neighborhoods where available land for community gardening is very limited or very expensive.  Peace Gardens can produce large amounts of nutritional crops at very low costs -- startup and operation costs are very low.  Peace Gardens are also ideal for schools, youth groups, senior citizen communities, churches, and health care facilities.

What do I need to start one?  Not much!  Locate a 1 meter by 1 meter garden space, with good sunlight and away from tree roots. Follow some simple instructions to build the grid, prepare the soil, and to select the appropriate combination of plants for your garden.

Who can I contact to help me get started? There is an increasing network of Peace Gardeners and Intensive Gardening fans in the Pittsburgh area. You may start with Rose Lord (412-655-3063 or rose@food4peace.com), and then engage others in your community. You will not regret it!  It is FUN and also HEALTHY!

This is how the Garden looked originally in May 2007 after we planted all 12 varieties of herbs and vegetables in Irwin's first Peace Garden.

Many thanks to Rose Lord from the Global Coalition for Peace, for her generous inspiration and guidance to construct this beautiful teaching garden for the community.

"May it bring peace to all who enjoy its natural beauty and abundance through cooperation."

Food farming in the world may be in crisis... according to many economic experts in the food sector, we may have lost our way as relates to food security in the U.S. and the world. From a global perspective, the situation appears daunting as governments and global food companies have consistently failed to act over the past 10 years to address issues with crop and land management, grain reserves, the impact of ethanol, and price inflation. However, from a local and regional perspective, the situation is ripe for a new kind of economic and social revitalization where the consuming public can be am integral part of the solution.

Join us on increasing the area's food farming consciousness!
