The
Point of Light magazine is the premier journal
serving our region in matters of meaningful living and holistic lifestyles. Since 1994, it has served the community of explorers who
believe in the integration of body, mind, spirit and emotions. In
today’s world, it is as important as ever to hold true to the ideals
of brotherhood and compassion while searching for meaning in one’s
own life. We believe in the innate goodness in the hearts of all
human beings and choose to hold that belief foremost in our minds as
we seek practical and effective means to enrich the experience of
being human.
The Mesa Creative Arts Center, in Burgettstown PA, West
of the 'Burgh, offers fabulous programs for arts, healing
and transformation, with a Native American theme, including
an outdoor medicine wheel. Brad and Kate serve a large area
of the population that we cannot reach from the East.
Between The Mesa and The Green Bough, we've got the city
cornered!
Epiphany Works is a non-profit organization dedicated to planning inspired events in our region.
The
Centers of Light Directory lists hundreds of people from
around the world who are doing good work that’s making a
difference in our world. In addition it has a large resource
section to be drawn upon by visitors. Our intent is to
report on events, activities, achievements, projects and
people who represent the highest and best of human endeavor
and what we can achieve, both individually and collectively.
We believe that this represents the true nature of who we
are. Our purpose is not only to inform and inspire, but to
provide cross cultural models from around the world as to
what people are doing to solve world problems and create new
options. We see a "Community Without Borders" as
those throughout the world who have seen a vision of a new
era and are dedicated to bringing it into reality
When we study Kundalini Yoga, we learn to
place our arms, hands, fingers, and the body itself into
very specific postures, creating certain angles. Combined
with powerful breathing techniques, with mantras, and with
meditation, these kriyas can produce amazing changes in our
psyche. The word yoga means "union." It is the union of the
finite (the subjective self) with the Infinite
(All-That-Is). It is also the union of breath and movement
which has as its ultimate goal the harmonious merging of
body, mind and soul into the universal energy surrounding
us. We refer to it as "the practice of Yoga," but the real
yoga is how you take what you've learned in class and live
it out in the world.
What's "Cohousing" and Who's Creating It In Pittsburgh?
Cohousing communities were first developed in Denmark in the late 1970s to revive community in neighborhoods. Of course, once
community minded Americans got wind of this concept in the late 80s, it didn't take long before the first Cohousing community was up
and running in 1991. By mid 2005 there were nearly 80 established Cohousing communities in the U.S. and another 51 now in the
development stage including The Pittsburgh Cohousing Group, which started meeting in the spring of 2005.
Cohousing communities are not religiously or politically based, they are simply intentional neighborhoods where members/residents
agree to be good neighbors, to look out for each other, and be good friends.
Members live independently in their own homes but have the unique convenience of a common house centered near the homes
in which to share community dinners and have access to shared resources like a fitness center, repair or create 'shops', and other
inventive spaces.
The
Pittsburgh Buddhist Center (PBC) was established on
September 2006 to serve the needs of the Buddhists and
friends of Buddhism in and around Pittsburgh. This is the
first Theravada Temple established in western
Pennsylvania. PBC plans to conduct meditation sessions,
Dhamma discussions and children’s Buddhism classes. There
will be a once a month talk given by a Buddhist scholar. PBC
welcomes your participation of its monthly activities as
well as your private visits to the temple.
